This 3DO came in reported as just having stopped working. It was a recent purchase which worked initially and then stopped while being used.
We’re having a really unpleasant heatwave at the moment so keeping this short!
Bench Temp: 37C
These are one of those unfortunate consoles that really badly suffer from capacitor leakage. It typically happens in the power supply section of the board but normally the board for the CD drive is affected too.
We’ll be recapping both boards and testing before reassembling and a thorough Play-Test 😀
As the capacitors start to age and leak it can cause some weird symptoms, like power cycling or randomly turning off. It is best to get them replaced before corrosion from the leaked electrolyte spreads and causes damage in unexpected places. Certainly in places you wouldn’t wish for corrosion to occur, such as around the adjacent RAM chips.
You can see in the pics where corrosion has taken hold. It is not unusual to see this has spread across more of the power supply circuit but luckily it is fairly contained here. Thoroughly cleaned after removing the old capacitors to get rid of the leakage.Â
